Singapore Signs AI Deals With Google And OpenAI As Nation Expands Global AI Ambitions

Singapore's $234 Million AI Push

Singapore has signed separate agreements with Google and OpenAI as it accelerates efforts to position itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence development and deployment.

OpenAI Commits More Than S$300 Million

Under its agreement with Singapore, OpenAI will invest more than 300 million Singapore dollars ($234 million) into the country’s AI ecosystem. The partnership also includes the launch of the “OpenAI Singapore Applied AI Lab,” which will become the company’s first AI lab established outside the US.

The initiative follows the opening of OpenAI’s Singapore office in 2024, which was created to support customers and partners across the Asia-Pacific region. The new lab is expected to employ more than 200 people over the coming years.

Focus Areas For OpenAI’s Singapore Expansion

The new AI lab will work across several national priority sectors, including:

  • Education
  • Public services
  • Finance
  • Healthcare
  • Digital infrastructure

The partnership will also include:

  • Training programmes for mid-career engineers
  • AI startup accelerator initiatives
  • Citizen-focused AI applications under broader “AI for All” efforts

Google Expands AI Cooperation

While Google did not announce a financial commitment, the company said its partnership with Singapore would focus on:

  • Addressing societal challenges
  • Building an AI-ready workforce
  • Supporting enterprise innovation
  • Strengthening AI security

Google’s collaboration will also involve training government researchers to use agentic AI tools for scientific research. Separately, the company will work with Singapore’s Ministry of Education to support AI training for educators.

Healthcare And Scientific Research

Google said it would explore further partnerships in healthcare and life sciences through its “global AI co-clinician research initiative.” The programme will examine how AI can support doctors and improve patient care through AI-powered tools and agents.

Alongside the partnership announcement, Google also released a joint whitepaper with Singapore’s government focused on the safe deployment of AI agents. The paper follows the launch of Singapore’s AI Agents Sandbox in August 2025.

Singapore’s Role In Global AI Race

Singapore has positioned itself as a neutral and talent-rich destination for AI development, testing and deployment. The latest agreements build on the country’s AI strategy, which includes more than one billion Singapore dollars in planned investment to strengthen public AI research capabilities between 2025 and 2030. The country has also attracted investments and partnerships from major global technology firms, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.
